Before you start looking, know what you need. Break down your script scene by scene and create a list of all required locations. Note the key story points and emotions that need to be conveyed in each place. Is it a cozy café or a sterile, intimidating office?

2. Think Outside the Box

You don’t always need to rent a professional studio or a mansion. Think creatively:

  • Friends and Family: Do you know anyone with a unique house, a cool backyard, or an interesting business?
  • Local Businesses: Small cafes, bookstores, or workshops are often willing to let you film during their off-hours for a small fee or even just a credit in the film.
  • Public Spaces: Parks, libraries, and public squares can be great, but always check if you need a permit. Filing for permits early is crucial.

When you visit a potential location, be thorough:

  • Photos & Videos: Take pictures from every possible angle.
  • Sound: Is it near a busy road, a flight path, or a construction site? Record the ambient sound.
  • Light: Where does the natural light come from at different times of the day?
  • Power: Are there enough outlets for your lights and equipment?
  • Logistics: Is there parking? Is there a place for cast and crew to wait?
